Our Core Pillars

At OVRI, we bridge the gap between building science, horticulture, and policy. Our work is driven by four key pillars dedicated to advancing and scaling the green roof sector.

Pillar 1 — Advocacy & Legislative Monitoring

We act as a unified industry voice in response to provincial and municipal policy shifts. OVRI actively advocates for the inclusion of green infrastructure within municipal Green Development Standards and Official Plans to ensure sustainable urban growth.

Pillar 2 — Technical Excellence & Standards

We support and participate in rigorous research and technical standards development for vegetated roof implementation and performance. In collaboration with trusted organizations like the NRC, CSA, conservation authorities, and universities, we promote the Canadian Landscape Standard as it applies directly to rooftop environments.

Pillar 3 — Specialized Education & Training

Bridging the gap between building science and horticulture, we offer sector-specific professional development. Our training programs focus on critical industry components, including rooftop safety, structural considerations, irrigation, and specialized growing media.

Pillar 4 — Public & Developer Awareness

We promote the measurable return on investment (ROI) of green roofs to the development community and the general public. Our efforts highlight the vital environmental and economic benefits of vegetated roofs, including stormwater attenuation, energy cost reduction, and urban heat island mitigation.
